When you think of Houston, what images cross your mind? Fourth largest city? Big oil? Freeway traffic? Great restaurants? Well, all that’s Houston, but for the next three weeks it’s rodeo time, and you’ll be right if you think the world’s largest with big name entertainers and cowboys vying for top prizes and FFA kids hoping their steer or pig or lamb will bring the highest price at auction. It all started today with GO TEXAN, and folks all over town are decked out in their western best.
I even wore my pink cowgirl hat and favorite cowboy earrings!
Not too far from my house, right in the heart of the city, a group of trailriders makes camp in a utility easement to have lunch and give their horses a final brushing before heading to Memorial Park where all the trailriders come together for what I bet is one big party. Here’s a look, and you can tell they are having a real good time.

Lest you think trailrides are only for cowboys, guess again. These gals add a little glamor to the scene.
Some riders take this time to relax and enjoy a bar-b-q lunch while others get their horses ready to move again.
Speaking of horses, most are tethered to transmission towers (this is the city) and seem to be content to graze in the grass.
The break is over, and it’s time to head on out.
Animals are back on the wagons, and with a police car leading the way down one of Houston’s busiest streets,
others in wagons travel to their last destination.
One thing’s for sure, it’s a whole lot of fun, and for us who take it all in, it’s a great day to be a Texan.
i love your comments, so jump right in and share yours

I was hopin’ you’d post something about the trail ride! Way to go, Mom! Yeeeehaw!!!!

Wow! I love the smiles in here! And the pink hat and earrings! Photos please of you wearing those!
Thanks for visiting my site … cause now I’ve found you! I’ll follow! I would be so comfortable in one of these wagons! My daddy built covered wagons … and I have a brother who still does. They’ve built carts for ponies and goats … all kinds of things that 4 legs can pull! Thanks for sharing!
Love to see the Trail Riders! My dad rode in the Salt Grass Group a few years and my sister got to ride in the parade downtown when she was like 12 years old. I was very jealous!
It’s not too late. Get yourself a horse and ride!
Looks like fun. Love that pup in the kerchief.
Looks like fun! My family lived in Houston in the early 80′s when I was in college, so I was only there for the summers but I have a special place in my heart for Texas
Oh Linda!
Thank you so much for sharing. I miss this time of year in Houston the most. The trailriders, the barbecue cook-off, parade and rodeo. It’s all so much fun. Wish I could be there.
Barbecue cookoff was last night, and I understand it was quite a costume party. Don’t know why we didn’t go.
Those people have been stopping there for several years at least — maybe many. It’s fun to see them.
Someday I should do a trail ride. Maybe from WUE to Colonial Park. On July 4. Gene
