Time Out

As my daughters became adults, I realized that the time we shared together would become less and less. Trying to think of some way to keep us from drifting apart, I felt that each year it would be nice for the three of us to do something special together. For a time that worked, but along came husbands and then children and our excursions came to a halt. Fortunately, all of us ended up living in Houston making it possible to gather for family dinners and special occasions. And when the hubby and I began spending time in Maine, they were a part of that, too.

Now, that is about to change as one daughter and her family are moving, and all of the family’s emotions are running wild! I can hardly bear the thought of her and her hubby not being close and thinking about their girls not being available for whatever adventure we dream up brings me to my knees. What makes me really sad though is knowing my two girls will be in separate places.

They are as different as night and day, salt and pepper, black and white, but since they became aware of one another they have been best friends.

20120527-182446.jpg
Only a year separates them, but there has never been a moment’s competition or jealousy between them. They are able to say things to each other that no one else could. Thinking about all this, I wanted one last time for the three of us before everything changed. What to do at the last minute that would be close and something we’d all enjoy?

Lake Austin Spa was the answer and provided just the time we needed.

Time to talk,

20120527-183154.jpg
to be silly,

20120527-183347.jpg
to be together,

20120527-183435.jpg
to say goodbye.
If you are inclined to say a little prayer, please include all of us as we separate and figure out how to adjust.

Never Too Old!

When I am lucky enough to spend time at home alone, nothing suits me more than to have a girls’ night.  You can bet it is always going to be an evening of laughter and fun!

This time around, girlfriends were invited to a pajama party, yes, a pajama party!    We tried to think when we last attended such a gathering and concluded that it was probably in junior high if you discount dorm room gatherings in college.

No Victoria’s Secret or sexy peignoirs here.  It was a cold night, so fleece and flannel were the best choice if one was going to stay warm.  As each gal came in, I had to laugh at how perfectly matched the wearer and the worn were!

What took the cake though was the footwear.

No one in this crowd was going to have cold feet.

Can you guess which slippers go with what pajamas?

As the evening wore on, we laughed until tears ran down our cheeks and this without too much alcohol.  As we thought about how different the evening would be if our husbands were present, we couldn’t help but wonder what kind of goofy get togethers guys have.  Maybe one of you men can fill us in.

Lakeside Casual

One of the very nicest things about life is the way we must regularly stop whatever it is we are doing and devote our attention to eating.

~Luciano Pavarotti and William Wright, Pavarotti, My Own Story

In Maine, a favorite get away for a lot of folks is a lakeside camp.  Camp means a cabin that is designed for warm weather use only and located in a very tranquil setting.  Camp is where you kick back and enjoy easy times with friends.

On this perfect evening, that was just what we did.

Appetizers were served on the screen porch

and the table was ready for a casual dinner.

The checked table cover looked like oilcloth, but the hostess revealed it was a 99 cent special from a local store.  It was just right for the white dinnerware and no doubt will be used again and again.

Flowers  from the yard were centered between candles that gave off a soft glow.

Dinner this night was real southern fare–bar-b-que chicken, corn pudding, tomato/cucumber salad–and I can promise you there were no scraps left.

The crowning touch? I can’t even think about this caramel cake from Caroline’s Cakes without drooling.  All of us could have eaten a second piece despite how rich it was, but we didn’t get that opportunity as half the cake was being saved for another occasion.  Boy, would I like to make that one, too!  By the way, if you have seen The Help, this very cake appeared in the movie.  Well, maybe not this one but one like it!

A Room of Her Own

Chances are  you are reading this in a comfortable spot, perhaps, with the sun shining in over your shoulder.  Chances are you’ve never been homeless, slept in your car or forced to live in an unsafe environment.  Not all women, or people for that matter, are so lucky, and recognizing this The Women’s Home has taken a step to make it possible for some Houston women to have a safe, affordable place to live.  Many will have been residents of The Women’s Home and will have completed the intensive whole life program there that allows them to regain control of their lives, improve their job skills and find employment.  For many the missing link has been a home, one they can both be proud of and afford.

With the opening of the Jane Cizik Garden Place Apartments, that has changed.  This beautiful 87 unit complex, built mostly with private funding, is dedicated to women and provides a first home for those who are entering the job market at minimal salaries.  It is a sober environment that also provides after care counseling that will reenforce the women’s efforts to maintain healthy lifestyles.

The apartments are more than just a place to live.  They are a place to gather and build new friendships,

to keep the body healthy,

to stroll among the gardens.

Each room of her own is a place to be proud of  and a wonderful tribute to all who made it possible.

Say What!

Playing duplicate bridge is a great past time, good for the mind and a satisfying way to spend Sunday afternoons when the hubby is watching football or fixing the plumbing.    It can, however, have its challenges.

Take, for example,  the bid cards.  In duplicate you don’t bid out loud. You use cards, nice once you get the hang of it.  Sometimes, though, when I am uncertain what to bid I touch, yes I said touch, the cards which immediately gets a response from the opposition who may even go so far as to call the director to remind me to keep hands off until I’m ready to make a bid.  What are they thinking, that I’m sending some kind of secret signal to my partner!

And then there’s taking your hand out of the board at the same time as someone else.  Today I was told that you never ever take more than one hand out at a time.  Well OK, got that message.

What about asking partner to play a card and immediately changing the call, say play a 7 rather than a 3?  My brain just got addled, no trick play here.

My favorite admonishment?  Being shushed after a hand is over because someone might hear what you are saying.  Now really!  You’d think that the people around you would be concentrating on their own table, not what’s going on at yours.

Even with all these little admonishments that leave you feeling like a child and not a very smart one, it’s still fun, and you know what?  Once you’ve been corrected you seldom make the same mistake again!

Now, if  on this Sunday afternoon someone could have just gotten my partner and me to the right contract when I had a 29 point hand, that would have been terrific!

Any of you duplicate players out there have stories you would like to share?

Leaving

First, let me say how lucky I am to live in two places that I love, but leaving each one is hard.  This time of year finds us leaving Rockport to return to Houston, and I  take with me memories and images that keep the place alive until we return.  There’s

the morning sound of lobster boats leaving to tend traps

the dirt road and the rocks on which we picnic

the natural beauty of unspoiled places

the quirky, interesting people I meet along the way

Pipe Dreams and the days of island exploration

Most of all I take with me friends, their laughter and spontaneity.

Yes, I will miss it all but only for a while.

Are there places you hate to leave?

Delightful Sunday

Any Sunday is a perfect time for

taking a walk

running on the dirt road

hiking

playing on the rocks

kayaking

smelling the flowers

reading

napping

meditating

If I’m going to do all these favorite things, I better get moving.

What are you doing on this seasonal Sunday?

Later

A summer Sunday and

there’re linens to launder

clothes to fold and some to iron

bathrooms to clean

and beds to make

but wait, the sun is shining on the porch,

the only sounds the wind rustling through the trees and boats rocking in the wind.

I think I will go and rock

and rock

and rock.

The rest can wait til later.
