Little Piece of Heaven

Going to Maine is like my favorite fleece: the people and the memories just wrap me up in warmth and it feels like home.

I’m not sure from where I copied those words, but they sum up my feelings about returning to Maine.  Perhaps I wouldn’t love it so much if I were here all the time, but for  five plus months it is my little piece of heaven where all the stresses and concerns of life are diminished.

So, what is it that makes Maine so special?  Well, there are a lot of things, but here are a few of my favorites.

Simple Things

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAWhen it comes to boating destinations, there are some places I never tire of.  One is Perry Creek, a peaceful inlet on Vinalhaven that is a favorite for our overnight get aways.

Perry CreekI love the quiet of the tree lined banks,

Perry Creekthe beauty of moonlight on the water

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERASometimes we are lucky enough to be the only boat in Perry Creek, but that doesn’t mean we are all alone.  No, we have for company a couple whose floating summer home is  eye candy.  Can you think of a place where plants could be happier?

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERASmall it may be, but there’s everything one could need for a simple life.  There’s no question these folks have got that figured out.  You know, there’s something to be said about keeping our needs to a minimum and focusing on what is all around.

On To Big Bend

Big Bend is a land of strong beauty, often savage and always imposing.

Lon Garrison

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERABig Bend is one of the more interesting but least visited national parks in the United States.  There’s good reason for that.  Big Bend is not an easy place to get to.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAIt is not right off any super highway which means you better know where to turn to get there.  And, it’s a good idea to start with a full tank of gas because there’s no close place to fill up when the gas gauge nears E.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAOnce there, the solitude and beauty of the place is overwhelming.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAIt is desert

and mountains.

It is rock formations

and canyons, all formed millions of years ago by volcanic activity.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAIt is green valleys along the Rio Grande,

Rio Grande 1the narrow, shallow river that serves as the border between the U.S. and Mexico.

Big Bend

It is native grasses swaying in the wind

and here and there an abandoned ranch or dwelling where a family once lived.  It is hard to imagine surviving in such a challenging environment.

Zurich: A Quick Look

ZurichOn the way to our real adventure, we made a quick stop in Zurich.  Lovely as it is, it is one of the most expensive places I’ve ever been.  A beer and bratwurst served with fries $30….really!

We strolled the streets and while the following may not be in sight seeing books, here’s what caught my eye.

cell phone talkersand, more likely, chatting on cell phones, checking messages or whatever.  That’s fodder for another whole post!

With so much to take in, who needs a guide book?
